Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday inaugurated the Corona Care Centre at IIM in Umsawli, Shillong — said to be the largest such facility in the state. With a capicity of 258 rooms with attached bathrooms, the centre will soon be operational and used for isolation of COVID-19 related cases.
Sangma lauded IIM for their support and also the several departments who have come together to renovate and set up the centre in a month’s time.
“This has been possible only with the support of IIM. Through the state government, we have managed to completely renovate this whole place. I would like to thank IIM for their support and all the officials who have worked day and night to make this possible and completed within a month’s time,” the CM said.
The centre is in place with about 70 people working, informed Sangma, adding that it will be utilised for positive cases, if the state records any, mostly in category A and B, which are mild cases.
“Therefore, this is most probably one of the biggest one in the state and maybe in the region too. Staffers are already staying here, about 70 of them will be here at any given time to take care of patients,” informed Sangma.
He informed that segregation has been set up. Staffers will be staying in separate floors. Likewise, the suspected cases will be in another floor and the positive patients in yet another floor.
With each individual room having an attached toilet, Sangma felt that the centre will be able to serve the purpose as required.
The institution was identified as a Corona Care Centre last month. With just the basic infrastructure, with no power connectivity and several other things not in place, several works were undertaken to set up the centre.
The rooms for the patients are provided with essential items like beds, mattresses, pillows, blankets, toiletries, plates, spoons, dustbins, chairs, tables, curtains, carpets, etc. in order to make the stay of the patients pleasant and comfortable.
Wi-Fi services are also in place and a police unit stationed at the centre
